Island golf course makes nine-hole top-10 list
CLINTON – An Island golf course has landed a spot on a national list of the top nine-hole golfing venues.
In an August publication of Canadian Business Magazine, Red Sands was listed as the fifth best nine-hole course in Canada by some of the most well-known golf writers.
Canadian Business publishes bi-weekly and monthly magazines that feature popular list and columns relating to sports, travel, other business news. The longest running business magazine in Canada had assigned writers Richard Warnica and Jeff Beer to investigate Canada's top nine-hole courses.
After sending dozens of emails and surveys to notable golfers and writers, their findings concluded that Red Sands popped up as a top course for several.
"Red Sands dominated the East Coast," said Warnica. "The individuals that mentioned the course spoke very highly of it and what it had to offer."
Warnica, who works as a staff writer at Canadian Business, was an avid golfer in his day and says what makes a successful nine-hole course is complexity.
"From what I've heard, the course has it all; it's not impossible to play for beginners and its still a challenge for a seasoned golfer."
Being located only minutes from Cavendish, Red Sands attributes about half of their business to tourists.
Red Sands prides itself on the quality of the entire property, however, one area gets a little extra attention.
Hole seven, the highest elevation of the course where golfers can see miles of rolling hills and countryside.
Other courses that made the list are: Allandale Golf Course (Innisfil, Ont.), Uplands Golf Club (Thornhill, Ont.), Flemingdon Park Golf Club (Toronto), Gleneagles Golf Course (West Vancouver), Harvest Hills Golf Course (Calgary), Elk Island Golf Course (Elk Island National Park, Alb.), Bowen Island Golf Club (Bowen Island, B.C.) and Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club (Niagara, Ont.).
